Tube cane selection & grading

Most of a reed's character is decided before the first cut. Selecting tube cane by diameter, wall and grain — and grading by density — is the quiet, unglamorous step that separates a consistent maker from a frustrated one.

Why selection comes first

A gouger and a knife can only reveal what is already in the cane. No amount of scraping turns coarse, wandering-grained stem into a fine reed — it only wastes time. Makers who grade carefully throw away cane before investing work in it, which is cheaper in every sense. The four things worth sorting for are diameter, wall thickness, grain, and density.

Diameter

Tube cane is sold by outside diameter, and diameter sets how far a gouged piece curves when it is folded over a shaper tip. Pick cane half a millimetre too wide and the blades sit open and leaky; too narrow and the reed closes and chokes. For oboe, most makers work in the 10.0–10.5 mm band and keep each half-millimetre sub-range together so a batch behaves predictably.

Wall thickness

Within a diameter class, wall thickness is the next sort. A thick wall gives the gouger more material to remove and tends toward a darker, more resistant reed; a thin wall runs the risk of gouging through to translucency at the centre. Measuring the wall with a dial gauge at the cut end, and rejecting the outliers, removes a whole category of later surprises.

Reading the grain

Hold a piece to the light and look along its length. The lengthwise vascular bundles should run straight and tight to the outer surface. Cane whose grain wanders, twists, or stands proud of the bark will not hold a clean scraped tip — it tears instead of shaving. Straight, fine, evenly spaced grain is the single best visual predictor of good cane.

Note

Sun-cured cane shows a warm, even straw colour. Green streaks mean it was cut or dried too fast; grey, chalky patches mean it is over-mature or was stored damp. Colour is a coarse filter, but a fast one.

Density and the float test

Density is the maker’s best single predictor of how a piece will play. Denser cane projects and lasts longer but resists the air; lighter cane responds easily but tires and goes soft. Many makers float gouged pieces in water or weigh them on a jeweller’s scale, then group hard, medium and soft so each batch scrapes consistently.

Keeping a selection log

The only way selection compounds into skill is to write it down. Note diameter, wall, density grade and how the finished reed behaved, and change one variable at a time. Over a season the log turns vague intuition into a repeatable recipe — and tells you, before you buy again, exactly which grower’s cane suits your gear.
